Frequently Asked Questions

Kindly read for a better understanding of laser hair removal and to see if it is right for you.

How long does the hair have to be? You need to be freshly shaved prior to each session (shaving the night before your appointment is best) and can shave as little or as much as you'd like in between sessions! Shaving must be the only method of hair removal until completion. If you wax/thread/pluck/other, you must shave the areas to be treated for 3-4 weeks prior to your first visit. (Yes, the face as well - it's not as scary as it seems!)

How many sessions will I need? On average, people need 6-10 sessions in total.

How often do I need to do laser? Every 4-8 weeks depending on the area being treated.

How long is the process? Sessions are very quick! Facial hair, under arms, bikini line and other areas only take 5 minutes, whereas half legs are completed in about 20 minutes.

Do I need to avoid the sun completely? Yes, and wearing sunscreen is necessary (highest SPF possible, reapply every 2 hours). Laser sessions will be held until tanned skin returns to its original colour.

Does it hurt? Most people are pleasantly surprised; it is more a discomfort than it is painful. Many describe it as a rubber band snapping on the skin. Numbing creams are available to ease the discomfort, though most people remain comfortable without it.

Is it contraindicated for anyone? Laser will not work on blonde, grey, white or red hairs. Unfortunately, black skin cannot be treated due to risk of skin discolouration and/or burns. (Check out the Yag Laser). Laser is considered safe for many, but for extra precautions it must be avoided if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some medications will react negatively to laser hair removal, please verify with your doctor and/or pharmacist.

Should I avoid anything pre or post laser? Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, tanning creams, makeup, deodorant/antiperspirant or creams before each laser session. Following a session, deodorant/antiperspirant is safe to apply. Sun exposure, hot showers, chlorine and excessive sweating are to be avoided. If irritation occurs, aloe vera and cold compresses can be applied for relief.

Will I be hair free forever? Laser is a method of permanent hair reduction, not elimination. Some hair will remain, often leaving few fine hairs behind. Hair can reappear due to hormone fluctuations (ie; PCOS, pregnancy, menopause). Touch ups every 6-12 months are recommended for all clients.

What machine do you use? We use the Vectus by Cynosure (formerly owned by Palomar), which is a true laser (not IPL)! it is a diode laser and safe to use with many skin types.
